Mediocre Work Doesn't

Your customers hear 3,000 marketing messages a day. You need to stand out to get attention, and get attention to
get results.

Here's how it werks:

Left BrainRight Brain

We're defined by who we are. Hardworking. Experts in both traditional and digital worlds. Lovers of great creative. Smart young talent out to make an impact.

Digital? Traditional? Yes. Meet a 21st Century Agency.

Traditional agencies know how to market, handle messaging, and identify an audience. But they’re clueless when it comes to the Internet.

Digital agencies, the ones that have grown up with and built the Internet, don’t understand traditional branding, messaging, print and broadcast advertising.

You need an agency that’s born of digital and traditional roots. You and your customers live online and offline. Shouldn’t your agency?

We embrace hard work as a virtue

We’re the agency that works.
Here are a few reasons why.

  1. Our background is both traditional and digital. We have an equal split in our founders between the two worlds and all of us live in both.
  2. We don’t work for our clients. We work for their prospects, customers, and constituents. If the audience doesn’t respond it doesn’t matter what our client thinks.
  3. Design matters. A lot. In fact, it’s amazing design work that gets attention and separates an organization from its competition.
  4. Communication is vital to good relationships.
  5. Marketing doesn’t come in a box. It’s not a product. It’s an ongoing process of understanding, creating, refining, and adjusting.
  6. Creative staff make an agency, not admin staff. Our creative staff are front and center, in meetings, and work directly with clients. Always.

Because Prior Experience Matters

We've worked for hundreds of clients and bring that along to inform every job we work on. Here are some organizations we've helped recently:

I understand how the parts fit together.

Matthias Roberge // Creative Director

I am inspired everyday. After being in the creative industry for over a decade, that's important. Whether it's a visit to the MFA, reading a good book, or simply playing with my amazing kids, I'm always discovering new fuel to keep the creative engine running.

In the past I've worked for traditional ad agencies, print shops, interactive firms, and even a stint as a corporate in-house designer. Every position I've held has provided me with a different outlook and unique process, which helps me look at the work from multiple angles.

If I'm not on my laptop or spending quality time with the family, there is a good chance I'm in the basement tinkering with a vintage Honda motorcycle. It will run again, oh yes it will.

My workboots are never clean.

Adam Kaufmann // Art Director

He began in the traditional ad world having a niche to bring BIG ideas to life. Seeing the clients eyes open up with excitement when the boards start flipping is what drives him to do what he does best. Create.

"Nothing feels better then when someone sees what you have done for them and they become thrilled, eager to show the world. It's what makes up for all the craziness this industry brings."

With the industry in constant change and the world adapting to new ways. Adam has as well. Merging the print world with the web world Adam has adapted to his environment. Overseeing all creative that leaves the company and getting his hands dirty in the trenches is what he loves.

On the weekends he's getting his hands dirty restoring his old New Englander. You may run into him at the local dump disposing of his building debris from demolition work. Whether its electric, drywall, roofing, plumbing or carpentry he finds a way to solve the problem with his keen sense of attention to detail.

Chris Hislop // Content Director

From campfire to classroom, notebook to magazine, kitchen table to boardroom… stories run rampant in my veins. They are what fuel my day to day. The words that make up these stories are important. Every space, and every character counts. It’s about delivery. Without it, your story may sound uninteresting, incoherent, incomplete, or… all of the above. If you’re leaving your audience scratching their head in confusion, you’ve done it wrong. If you have them nodding their head in wonderment, and smiling in agreement, you’ve hit the mark.

I’ve spent my life chasing good stories and documenting them in written form; Crafting stories for clients that have a passion for what they do, but can’t express themselves wholly in words. We’re not all writers. It’s true. But what we do have in common is the notion that we all have stories to share. Those stories need to be told. I want to hear yours, and I want to help you get it out to the world in a way that has the world coming back to figure out just who it is offering said tale.

When I’m not chasing words, I’m re-learning how to appreciate everything around me through the eyes (and filter) of a child. My one-year old son has taught me that when you take things too seriously, you miss out on all the little nuances that make “serious” poignant and, well, fun. He’s taught me that inspiration is found in the most curious of locations. A window shade, the way a door opens and closes, a raindrop, a snowflake, a leaf on the ground, the ceiling fan, the dog’s ears, the pull chord on a lamp, and anything that can be turned into a drum (which I’ve learned is just about everything).

Let’s work together and have a bit of fun bringing your stories to life.

Our process will revolutionize your marketing.

We start with your goals. Need $5m in new sales? An extra 100 client inquires per month? Absolutely, positively, must be done for the 1st? The more specific and objective we are - the better our plan for success. From there we determine how to acquire the eyeballs to reach those goals, engage prospects, customers, and constituents, and maintain those relationships.

Standing out in a field of 3,000 isn't easy, but it's vital to your success. Here are examples of work we've delivered in the past to build a foundation or move an organization forward.

Mediocre Work Doesn't

Logos + Identities

How do you stick out as a pizza joint amidst a sea of pizza parlors nation-wide? You keep it simple. You play on non-traditional ingredients. You crafts a logo that catches eyes, tempts palettes, and creates wonder. That’s the logo we created for Crispy Crust.

We were asked to develop a new identity for world-renowned brand, Paul Mitchell, and their Northern New England branch. This was no small feat. What we looked to achieve was a means of incorporating urban lifestyle and their products to appeal to hair-dressers and high end hair salons. With the cityscape built out of their known product bottles, we’re pretty happy with the results. So were they.

Co-Creative Health came to us for a brand refresh and marketing consultation for their essence infused medicinal line of remedies. What you see here is a collaborative piece of imagery that works in all elements of what it means to adhere to the development of earth-inspired wellness elixirs.

What happens when you’re asked to brand the identity of a hospitality management company looking to convey that they’re the authoritative force in their industry? It’s quite simple. The tagline says it all. “Setting the Highest Standard.” This mark is clean, direct, and exudes confidence.

MMA Guru and personal trainer, Guy Chase had a vision. We listened to that vision, comprehended it, and delivered knockout collateral across a number of mediums.

A montage of healers came together to form a new kind of healthcare practice. They can help coach you to live well and prevent illness vs. fighting illness after its already present and fighting.

Warwick place is in the process of developing a multi-platform entertainment destination geared towards a convenient centralized facility that allows you to take in dinner, a movie, and more without having to travel all over town. They speak high-end entertainment. They speak elegance. They speak uniqueness. They speak power. So does their mark. That was the goal.

Trying to brand a powerful online journal from the Centrist Movement wasn’t easy. Enter the owl, America’s next political symbol. (Step aside, donkey and elephant). Whooo, whooo? Center Movement. Move forward.

Better living through stress management and attaining serenity. We were looking to design a logo that spoke soothingly to those that laid eyes on it. Warm color paired with warm action = successful implementation of the brand’s initial goals.

For over forty years Goodwin Community Health used the same name and the same look. Transitioning from their old look wasn't easy but with new facilities and new funding came new opportunity. Boldwerks was there to make the transition easy. We approached this logo with the same degree of care that they themselves exude when it comes to analyzing and treating their patients.

AUVAC // Case Study

auvac-case-study.jpgIdea:

What do you do when you’re in an industry that has many movers and shakers, many ideas floating on the surface, but no clear organized hub from which to extract said information? Easy. You start an organization whose mission it is to make that central educational hub a reality. Autonomous Undersea Vehicle Applications Center (AUVAC) is that organization when it comes to the Autonomous Undersea Vehicle (AUV) industry.

Initiation:

AUVAC contracted us to achieve their goals of advancing the development, utilization, and integration of the AUV systems worldwide. What we did to help them realize their ideas was built out a website that acts in its objective, as a tool for end-users to host their content related to the AUV industry, as well as research trending industry happenings. It needed, at the outset, to have a forward track of growth and afford itself the opportunity to become a self-sustaining entity. One in which the experience of the site provided both researchers and thought-leaders led to funding through sponsorship and communal activities within the AUV community.

“There were many moving pieces and parts to what we envisioned in hosting an online hub,” said AUVAC Co-Founder Richard Blidberg. “We weren’t sure how to achieve what we were looking to offer the community, and if it would even work and be able to sustain itself. We turned to Boldwerks to aide us in making our collaborative thoughts a living, fully realized entity. The growth and rate of user engagement has been stifling. I’m excited about where we are now, and what the future looks like as we move forward.”

Impact:

Over a one year span (2012) the traffic to AUVAC’s site grew 92%. The 40,000 visitors that arrived to the site resided in 159 different countries – a testament to the audience that utilizes AUVAC as a resource, and as a valued member of the extensive AUV community. The site is a working informational hub that showcases up-to-date breaking industry news, as well as resources that speak to what’s going on with industry product development, as well as what’s being worked on across the 350 institutions, organizations, and manufacturers worldwide. The growth thus far has been stifling, and it will only continue to develop from here. AUVAC.org is the go-to resource for those in the know of the AUV industry.

Emuge // Case Study

emuge-case-study.jpgIdea:

Picture this. You’re in the machining industry. You’ve been a major industry player for over 80 years. You’ve got over 100,000 different products that you manufacture and sell worldwide. How do you take that experience – you’re industry clout, and the products you develop and sell – and translate that into a website that is engaging, informative, and easy to navigate? It’s not easy. For high performance tool creators, Emuge, that answer was Boldwerks.

Initiation:

Emuge holds a spot in the top tier of most difficult website implementations that we’ve been faced with. Now when we say, “difficult,” we’re not making the claim that we were worried. We weren’t. We embrace challenge, and thrive off of grinding the creative gears to formulate the best possible solution for our clients. For Emuge, we designed and built the most comprehensive and technically sound websites that can be found in the machining and milling industry.

“We are really proud of the newly renovated emuge.com,” said Emuge Information Systems Manager, Derek Belanger. “It represents a lot of work and a healthy blend of intellectual and creative thinking. Starting out, we had a few goals and we must have done a good job of setting them because we didn’t have to add or drop any.”

Not only is the page visually appealing, and a vast resource for the industry community that accesses it, but it also showcases each and every one of those 100,000 products that they’re grinding and producing in their facilities. Their product database is searchable, and end-users are greeted with dynamic, unique content for each search query they draft. Each product has it’s own landing page with pertinent product details and the current stock that is available for purchase. It’s robust, it’s detailed, it’s functionality that is far superior to just offering a PDF download of your product catalogue. You get answers fast with this interactive database.

Impact:

“For us the strongest business impact is in good will, reputation and to some degree product promotion,” said Belanger. “You really can encourage customer loyalty with a well-crafted website, we believe we are now doing this better than ever before. Use of analytics to study customer interest and behavior is very valuable and Boldwerks made sure really great business intelligence tools are available to us. In fact with so much product data and marketing material available on our website we may be able to make significant business decisions based on the telemetry we collect.

“The new website basically comes down to one point. We're a brilliant company who really appreciates its customers and now emuge.com helps us prove to the world who we are and how we feel.”

Dermatology & Skin Health // Case Study

dermatology-case-study.jpgIdea:

The healthcare field has made huge strides in embracing the internet. Mind you, this is not universal. Whether it’s shortage of funding, or hesitation to realize the inherent value of the digital realm, there are those that are taking advantage, those that aren’t, and those that are exceeding their initial digital goals.

Dermatology Skin & Health in Dover is one such organization that is taking advantage, and is continually working towards the latter. Their initial want was to introduce their practice to an online audience. They were hoping to get a “Contact Us” page up so that prospective patients could dial in, or email requests and book appointments. They approached us to see if we could make that happen for them. Our answer? Of course

“We had no foundation for who we were, what we are, and what we could offer the community,” said Laurie Seavey. “We needed to come up to times, have presence in the digital setting. We needed to increase access and visibility. We assumed people knew where we were, and they didn’t.”

Initiation:

Sure we could deliver a Contact Us page. That’s simple. Any shop that codes sites could have made that happen for them. What we wanted to do was expound upon their interest in investing in this digital landscape and create a presence for them that not only allowed their prospective clients to make contact, but also position Dermatology Skin & Health as an industry thought-leader. We sought to inspire. What we built for them is a robust interface that is a trend setting industry design and operative implementation. Their website is a valuable user reference portal.

“We’re very pleased with the site,” said Seavey. “The site took on a different meaning than what we thought it would initially. The site became an educational piece. We thought it was going to be a contact us page, now that’s it focused on educations, it makes more sense, and establishes us as leaders in the industry. We are never opposed to different views on things. We value Boldwerks as a marketing force, and we value how they go above and beyond to make sure we’re marketing ourselves to our fullest potential. They value our success, and thrive off of helping our business.”

Impact:

Dermatology Skin & Health’s new website has provided the organization with tremendous visibility – offering patients an astounding medical resource and insight into the organizational values of the practice. They continue to grow daily, bringing in new staff, and garnering more traffic to the site daily, which is as much an educational tool as it is a piece of brand collateral. When done correctly and effectively, the two should be operating in unison. It’s in that cohesiveness that success blooms.

Mercator Advisory Group // Case Study

mercator-case-study.jpgIdea:

The financial industry is competitive. It’s also a vertical that practices and maintains smooth and secure transactions at all junctures. This is a vital piece of the puzzle.

Mercator Advisory Group was looking for a website that boasted an equally professional and creative design in its look and feel. They were looking for a site that drives consumer engagement and positions the organization as a thought leader and online resource for the financial consultation industry. The site is sleek and savvy, affording Mercator the opportunity to offer their clients a unique user portal to seek advice and ask questions; Smoothly and securely – imperative organizational goals that were implemented seamlessly.

“The biggest need for us was to procure a website that offered a greater level of engagement point – especially when it comes to communicating directly to our customers,” said Mercator’s Director of Marketing, Brent Watters. “One of the unique challenges we were looking to construct was the need for our clients to have their own customized dashboards allowing our team to send direct communication to each individual member and permitting customization that enabled a unique user experience. None of this existed before. The integration of this usability function allows us to tie in our work towards a greater use of social media by integrating in Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. – personal communications that we can push through those social channels that cover and expand the possibilities of new business.”

Initiation:

Building out a revamped and more technically robust digital presence for this trusted global advisor of the payments and banking industry was a welcome challenge to Boldwerks. The new site is complex in its genetic makeup, offering users the opportunity to set up their own individual account enabling them to login and have access to vertical specific reports crafted for their specific industry needs. From debit reports, to international payment graphs, and analyst driven, diagnostic based blogs. The site maintains its credibility as a thought-leader led platform through the channels of a robust press room, speakers bureau that caters to tip-based, best-practice led conversations, webinars, industry events, and much more. This interactive backend interface fits the needs for Mercator, and the way it’s built will help them serve and position the site as a vital tool for their client and prospective user pool.

“We’re very pleased with the end result,” said Watters. “It’s very well thought out and the team did a very good job in allowing it to be a scalable entity. We’re happy that Boldwerks is continually working with us to evolve the site – especially as we continue to research and understand the competitive landscape. Again, this is a tool that affords us greater level of engagement, direct communication, and customization. Boldwerks embraced the unique challenges that arose as we went along in the implementation process. They implemented scalable requirements that came to light as we continued to analyze and understand just what it is we were looking to achieve. Their patience and due diligence were invaluable as we continued to move forward and progress with the website’s development.”

Impact:

We pride ourselves on creative design, and our ability to build out a unique and vertical defining web presence, which is exactly what we provided Mercator with. The team was able to work to create functionality that did not exist before for the organization’s corporate website, and met the needs for proper customer engagement and proper messaging and communications that they were looking to push out for new business acquisitions.

“We have recommended Boldwerks for projects to a couple folks that they have mentioned to us,” said Watters. “We were comfortable in recommending Boldwerks due to the quality of service, and their attention to detail – They lift a lot of heavy weight and rise to any occasion. They remain professional even in the most challenging of circumstances. That’s of utmost importance when you’re building not only a website, but a working business relationship as well.”

Azuki Systems // Case Study

azuki-case-study.jpgIdea:

Ever heard of Azuki Systems? If you haven’t, you’re probably familiar with their work. “Azuki – based in Massachusetts – extends and enhances internet-scale content delivery systems with adaptive delivery, advanced interactivity and other key features that facilitate rich media services on all major wireless device platforms.”Simply put: Azuki takes the video that you want to see on your smart phone or tablet and delivers it right to the palm of your hand, no matter which platform the device operates on.

Initiation:

The media world is hugely impressed by what Azuki does. They do it better than anyone else in their industry. Their old web site, however, didn’t get that message across as effectively and as vitally as their work does. That's why they hired Boldwerks to develop a strong new online presence that utilizes video, e-newsletters, and social networking – enabling Azuki to effectively communicate the message of their brand, and with the users that are accessing their site as an informative hub. Now all of the tools that Azuki works with are working for them as well. The new site at www.azukisystems.com has some great features including a homepage slider that integrates dynamic text, images and embedded video as well as JavaScript enabled dropdown menus. In short, we wanted to deliver Azuki a website that was eye-catching, visually compelling, and as vital as the service they provide their customers.

Impact:

Boldwerks launched Azuki’s new, robust website in the spring of 2011, and has been working with them ever since to establish their brand as the thought-leader and vital innovative frontrunner of “TV Anywhere” delivery platforms for service providers, content owners and broadcasters. We are pleased to have contributed to the marketing efforts, which led to the sale of their company to global technology leader, Ericsson on Feb. 6, 2014.

Azuki Systems extends Ericsson's leading TV and media portfolio, which includes the recent addition of Mediaroom from Microsoft. Through the acquisition, Ericsson will accelerate the availability of new and compelling viewing experiences across a variety of devices and screens. In addition, Ericsson will gain additional key functionality related to the deployment of TV Anywhere services, including adaptive bit rate and content protection technologies. In addition, the acquisition brings a team of highly skilled software engineers from Azuki Systems.

Per Borgklint, senior vice president and head of business unit support solutions at Ericsson said, "We are executing on our TV & Media strategy and Azuki adds key technologies and capabilities to extend our market leadership position. Traditional TV is shifting rapidly towards TV Anywhere. Azuki Systems further positions Ericsson to help customers deliver on the Networked Society's global demand for customized and personalized media experiences that include content on any screen, any time across any network."

Cheng Wu, CEO and co-founder of Azuki Systems, said: "Service providers, content owners and broadcasters face a range of challenges as they race to make content available on any device. Through worldwide deployments of our proven next generation video delivery solution, we have helped accelerate deployment and monetization of TV Anywhere services. Continuing this work as part of Ericsson will ensure that customers globally will have the most advanced support as they aim to deliver the best services for their subscribers."

Loyalty Builders // Case Study

loyalty-case-study.jpgIdea:

Loyalty Builders is not a construction company as the name might have you believe, but they do build things. They’re a leader in helping companies build revenue through customer allegiance – a service enabling their clients to generate net-new revenue streams from existing customers which in turn is a win and boost in the bottom line for all parties involved. By building higher response rates, they’re building greater customer loyalty. Loyalty Builders’ marketing analytics software analyzes customer transaction data to gain insights into customer behavior. These analytics can predict who will buy, when they will buy, what they will buy, and which customers are at risk, enabling companies to get significantly greater revenue from existing customers and dramatically improve return on marketing dollars. The idea then, was to construct a website for them that placed them at the forefront of their respective industry – placing their brand as the allegiant source for loyal and consistent revenue gains.

Initiation:

As the leader in the individualized direct marketing industry, Loyalty Builders needed a new website that accurately reflected their services and provided users with easy access to valuable resources like their collection of white papers, videos and more. They chose Boldwerks for the project due to the mission we’ve remained loyal to for the entirety of our existence – crafting creative industry leading design and eye-popping websites for the clients we work for. Due to our vital creative practices, we’ve generated a large portion of our business through word of mouth – which is exactly how we started our relationship with Loyalty Builders. We worked closely with the Loyalty Builders team in Portsmouth, NH and Fargo, ND to identify the primary goals for the new website and created their new web presence based on the plan we unearthed through these conversations.

Loyalty Builders needed a new site that showcased their services and provided easy access to valuable resource collateral that was mission critical to them and the organizations that placed these materials of high value. Boldwerks then went to designing a new site that featured a high-level main menu that allows users to find what they’re looking for quickly. The finished product is streamlined, robust, and loyal to the company’s customer needs.

Impact:

The old site had a disorganized navigation structure that made it difficult for users to locate key content. We designed the new website to focus on a very clean, concise high-level main menu element that utilizes a JavaScript powered dropdown menu to allow visitors to find content quickly and easily.

The new site also features a customized slider on the homepage that is used to showcase important, mission-critical information and drive users to targeted resources. Since its recent launch, the site has received great feedback, and analytics are showing steady improvement in traffic to vital content that has been featured more prominently on the new site. The Loyalty Builders team is very pleased with their new site and we’re excited to be building another loyal relationship with a great Portsmouth area company.
